In general your SOP should include at least some information directly addressing why you are applying to that school. I have a different SOP for each of the schools I'm applying to and you should too. I use word 2007 maybe the new versions that you use works differently! Why 10 separate documents? you write the SOP in one word file and each time edit part of it. HappyQuark wrote:With Word, even the smallest change requires that you open 10 separate documents, change them and save them all separately. Using LaTeX in this way forces my documents to be consistent. With Word, even the smallest change requires that you open 10 separate documents, change them and save them all separately.Īlso, I can totally see myself doing a final check before submitting an SOP, finding an error and fixing it but not thinking to make the same changes in my other documents. In LaTeX I just edit my single reference file and then run my macro that compiles all of my documents. For example, say I decide to re-word the section of my SOP that describes my research experience. On a more serious note, the only reason I used LaTeX was because it eliminates the necessity to edit 10 different documents any time I decide something needs to be changed. Rims wrote:Am I the only one writing everything in Word? Do you think it is necessary to use latex instead? Of course it's not mandatory, but considering the fact that everybody is using latex, it might look like I didn't take my statement seriously enough. I heart Cornell sooooooooooooooooooooooooo much because. But now I just use a macro in TextMate to compile and run all of my files. At one point I was using a python script I wrote to find my tex files, compile/run pdflatex. With an intro tex file and general tex file all I have to do is finish off the SOP with school specific information. Since I'm interested in 2 different fields of research and applying to schools based on these 2 fields, I've created 2 different intros (plasmaintro.tex and particlesintro.tex). To elaborate a bit more on what I'm doing. For the most part I only customize the header and the ending paragraph, but it's good to have options. Then I create the sops with a simple Perl script that takes the structure-tex, checks if customized files exist for that school, and uses a general default file if not (to make sure I can still have a complete sop even if I run out of time to customize them all). tex files for header (since some schools want their name/department, my date of birth, etc), intro, then the main body of the sop, and lastly the ending paragraph illustrating fit for the particular school. It looks a little something like thisĬonsidering my research experience and area of interests outlined above, became super happy fun time for my brain! This means I only have to write about the general stuff once. Then I create a separate document in which I allow LaTeX to reference that section, and then include information specific to that school. applicable to each university) section about myself, research experience, grades, etc. HappyQuark wrote:The way I've gone about doing my SOP is, via LaTeX, writing a generic (i.e.

#POINT MEASURE COMMAND NOT WORKING WINDOWS# Status Displays drawing statistics, modes, and extents. Time Displays the date and time statistics of a drawing. (You can also get this information by selecting a grip and looking at the status bar.) Here is a listing of ID POINT: Command: ID Specify point: This allows you to select anywhere on the screen and have AutoCAD return the X,Y&Z coordinates for that point. Notice that you can get the same information, but also have the option of changing anything that you need to.Īfter List, the next option is ID POINT. Here are the properties (CTRL+1) for the same line: Here is a listing of a line: Command: LI LISTįrom point, X= 9.2042 Y= 13.5272 Z= 0.0000 This is usually the information that AutoCAD needs to know about it to keep track of it in its database. LIST is an inquiry that gives you some basic information about a command. This is a lot of information, so AutoCAD gives you the option of saving it to a file after it is displayed. K: 7.7653 along Write analysis to a file? : n Principal moments and X-Y-Z directions about centroid: This listing shows you all the information you can get from MASSPROP: Command: massprop Select objects: 1 found Select objects: AutoCAD also figures out some important engineering figures for you such as the center of gravity for an object. You can find out the total volume and from there calculate the weight based on volume. MASS PROPERTIES is an option for finding information about 3D solid objects. Or you may need to add several rooms together. You may need to find the carpeting area of a room, but exclude where you have tile. You also have the option of adding to or subtracting from the initial area. If you select the next option (object), you can select a circle, rectangle, polyline or some other closed object. AutoCAD returns the area and the perimeter length. You can pick as many points as you need and then press enter when you’re done. This allows you to select the four corners of a room to find the total area in square drawing units (usually inches). The default option is to pick a point on the screen. To use this command, you can type in AREA and see this on your command line: Command: AREA This can used to calculate square footage for floors, property lots, or even something like sheet metal parts. You can either select and object or pick points.ĪREA is a command that can be very useful. Volume measurements can be used on 3D objects or 2D objects (if you enter a height). Now you’re asked to select 2 lines and the screen will display the angle between them. You are left in the command and can select another option like Angle. With Radius selected, just pick on any arc or circle to have the radius displayed.ĪutoCAD is kind enough to give you both the radius and the diameter on the screen – and on the command line: Command: measuregeom Enter an option : R Select arc or circle: Enter the command and then choose radius from the list on the screen. MEASUREGEOM is used to for a few options, among them Radius which will measure the radius of a circle or arc. Specify second point or : ĭistance = 12.5107, Angle in XY Plane = 25, Angle from XY Plane = 0ĭelta X = 11.3228, Delta Y = 5.3208, Delta Z = 0.0000 It allows you to select two points on the screen and AutoCAD will tell you the total distance as well as the changes in X,Y & Z. The first one, DISTANCE ( DI), is quite straight forward. #POINT MEASURE COMMAND NOT WORKING WINDOWS# Windows PowerShell event log.ID Point Displays the coordinate values of a location. This example measures the time it takes to run a Get-EventLog command that gets the events in the Script blocks run by Measure-Command run in the current scope, not a child scope.
